Statement on the situation in Palestine and Israel

We are shocked and saddened by the loss of life and suffering in Israel, Gaza and the Middle East.  Our thoughts are with all those caught up in the conflict, including all the friends and colleagues we have worked with in the region over the years.  We sincerely hope that there will be a swift and peaceful resolution.

The first priority for all must be the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law.  However, as a project that exists to promote the preservation of cultural heritage resources, EAMENA also calls for the protection of cultural heritage, another obligation under international law. The continuing conflict places the rich record of the region under increasing threat. Cultural heritage is of fundamental importance to the lives and identities of present-day people, and once lost cannot be replaced.
